What is the PHRT?

The Perinatal Healing Reflection Tool (PHRT) — The Healing Mirror is a trauma-informed, culturally grounded reflection framework designed to support individuals throughout pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period. The PHRT recognizes that the perinatal experience is unique for every person and creates space for reflection, connection, and healing through a holistic exploration of physical, emotional, spiritual, and social well-being.

Unlike traditional screening tools that primarily focus on identifying symptoms, the PHRT centers the individual’s lived experience. It provides an opportunity to pause, reflect, and explore how pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum transition are impacting their sense of self, relationships, emotional wellness, and overall healing.

The PHRT was created with the understanding that the perinatal journey is more than a medical experience—it is a significant life transition influenced by personal history, culture, identity, relationships, community support, birth experiences, and emotional well-being. Through guided reflection and compassionate conversation, the PHRT helps individuals recognize their strengths, identify areas where additional support may be beneficial, and connect with resources that promote healing and wellness.

The PHRT can help illuminate experiences that may otherwise remain unspoken, including feelings of overwhelm, isolation, grief, fear, disconnection,
uncertainty, or unresolved experiences related to pregnancy or birth. It also highlights protective factors such as resilience, connection,
self-awareness, support systems, hope, and personal empowerment.

The PHRT is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace clinical assessment or mental health evaluation. Instead, it serves as a supportive framework that bridges reflection and care—helping doulas, healthcare professionals, community workers, and support systems better understand an individual’s experiences and collaboratively identify pathways toward healing, connection, and support.

At its core, the PHRT asks:

“How is this person truly experiencing their perinatal journey, and what support do they need to feel seen, heard, valued, and whole?”

By honoring each person’s voice, identity, and lived experience, the PHRT shifts conversations about perinatal wellness from simply identifying challenges to fostering healing, empowerment, resilience, and restoration.
